1. Past simple

e.g. He had no idea what I was talking about. 

Did he cook dinner?

He didn't check to see if the windows were closed. 

 

2. Past continuous ("be" in the past + verb-ing)

e.g. He was writing a letter when I called.

    Was he writing a letter when I called?

    He wasn't writing a letter when I called. 

 

3. Past perfect simple 

("have" in the past + past participle of the chosen verb)

e.g. I had already submitted the form before he requested it. 

 Had he finished the test when the bell rang?

He hadn't already left when I arrived home. 

 

4. Past perfect continuous

("have" in the past simple + been + verb-ing)

e.g. They had been talking for 3 hours when Sara arrived. 

Had he been running for three hours? 

He hadn't been playing computer games for three hours when she arrived. 

 

5. Advanced uses: past tenses and would

5.1. Past tenses

a) with was / were to + past participle when describing something that actually happened

Robin Williams did monologues in clubs first, but after some years he was to become a huge star. 

b) polite requests or suggestions (past continuous, indirect questions)

I was wondering if I could use your phone. 

c) past arrangements that may / may have not taken place

Tom was meeting friends, so he drove into town. 

I hope he didn't get lost.

d) plans that did not happen or expectations taht were not fulfilled as expected.

I had meant to call him after lunch.

Sandy was hoping to buy that dress she'd seen while window shopping, but it was sold out.
