1. used to + base form

Past habit, state, situation or action that happened regularly in the past but is not longer true.

->I used to play the drums when I was 15.


2. be used to + noun / gerund

 To talk about something we are accustomed to.

-> They were used to the long hot summers in Seville.

-> He is used to waking up at 6.30am. 


3. get used to + noun / gerund

To express that we are still in the process of becoming accustomed to something (can be used in all tenses)

-> We are getting used to the spicy food.

-> She can't get used to working at home.


4. would + base form

Action that happened regularly in the past (similarly to used to) but no longer happens. 

NOTE: This meaning of would is not usually used in negative sentences or questions or for a past state or situation.

-> I would visit my grandparents every Sunday when I lived in Spain.


1. A past action that had not yet happened at the time of speaking.

2. Refusal in the past (with not)


-> 1.2. As a student, I moved to Germany, where I would study for 5 years.

-> 2.1. The child would not tell the truth to her parents.
